About Sara Paruppu (Cheronjee Nut ):

The leaves are thick, leathery, oblong, and broad and are rounded at the base. The flowers are small and greenish-white and form a terminal panicle. The fruit is black in color and is harvested from April to June. The fruit has a hard seed coat while the inside kernel is soft like a pine nut. It has a slightl acidic flavor akin to that of an almond. Normally the seeds are roasted or toasted before consumption or usage as heat makes more flavors emanate from the seed. The seeds are flat, oval, and speckled with dark patches.

Health Benefit of Sara Paruppu (Cheronjee Nut) :

  • Treats Diarrhea: The astringent properties present in the oil extracted from the seeds have the capability to regularize bowel movements. They work by binding the stool particles together. Chironji oil is, therefore, effectively used in treating diarrhea. Adding a few drops of this oil to a fruit juice or ORS is the best method of consumption.
  • Enhances Sexual Health: The roasted seeds of chironji have aphrodisiac properties. They increase libido and help overcome problems like premature ejaculation and impotence. They also enhance the quality and motility of sperms. The roasted and ground seeds when consumed with milk promote added benefits of strengthening the reproductive system.
  • Prevents Diabetes: The leaf extract of the chironji plant has anti-diabetic properties. A study conducted on diabetic rats revealed a significant reduction in blood sugar levels after the chironji leaf extract was administered.1 Further studies are in progress to check for the level of efficacy in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Treats Ulcers: Traditionally, chironji root extract has been widely used in treating mouth ulcers. Studies were conducted on rats and the findings showed positive results. The wound-healing ability of the extract fights the ulcers formed in the GI tract. Though the study emphasizes therapeutic benefits,
  • Clears Congestion: Chironji oil has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Steam inhalation after adding a few drops of the oil to water helps clear nasal and chest congestion. The antioxidant property rebuilds the tissue layer in the case of severe cold. The leaf and root extracts have also shown similar medicinal benefits in rats.
  • Benefits Skin: Chironji oil is an excellent moisturizer. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties prevent aging and keep any skin infections at bay. Ground chironji seeds when mixed with gram flour and curd make an excellent scrub for the face. When mixed with aloe vera, they promote flawless and acne-free skin.
  • Reduces Inflammation: The anti-inflammatory properties reduce the swelling of thyroid glands. Topical application of the oil has shown beneficial results. Application of the same on the joints significantly reduces the swelling and pain due to rheumatoid arthritis. Skin infections post an insect bite or over-exposure to the sun can be treated by massaging the affected area with the oil.
